October 17 2024 – The City of Vancouver is the first municipality in the Lower Mainland to approve an expansion to the Metro West Inter-Municipal Business Licence (IMBL) to include in-home health care professionals and services, which would reduce administrative and cost burdens for the in-home health care sector.
Launched in 2013 and made permanent in 2015, the Metro West IMBL program is designed to facilitate business operations across Vancouver, Burnaby, Delta, New Westminster, Richmond, and Surrey. Under the IMBL framework, businesses obtain a licence in their home municipality and, for an additional fee, receive the IMBL for all participating municipalities, thus reducing administrative burdens and costs associated with operating in multiple municipalities.
Currently, the Metro West IMBL is limited to construction and trades-related businesses. With Vancouver being the first municipality to approve this expansion, businesses offering in-home health care and related services may soon be able to operate seamlessly across the participating municipalities using a single licence.
If approved by other municipalities, the IMBL will simplify operations and reduce costs for health care professionals, including professions such as nurses, registered massage therapists, and counselors...

Vancouver, BC – Today, Mayor Ken Sim proudly announced that Kitsilano Pool will reopen on August 7th, 2024, pending any unforeseen challenges. Joined by the construction crew onsite, Mayor Sim expressed excitement that this iconic community
hub will soon welcome residents and visitors to enjoy the summer.
“Every Vancouverite has a memory from Kits Pool,” said Mayor Ken Sim. “It's where many of us learned to swim, where we met up with friends on sunny days, and where families enjoyed summer vacations. As one of the most iconic pools in Canada, our Council is dedicated to ensuring it remains a centerpiece of our city while we move forward with plans for a new facility.”
Despite renovations in 2018, Kitsilano Pool faced significant challenges, including ongoing leaks that posed health and safety risks, resulting in its closure last summer. To address these challenges, repairs are currently underway to extend the pool's lifespan by approximately two years while plans for a new facility are developed. Mayor Sim highlighted the invaluable contribution of engineer Jeff Stibbard, who he secured to provide pro-bono advice to help implement this short-term solution and ensure the pool's timely reopening this summer.
“Closing Kits Pool was a disappointment shared by the entire city,” said Mayor Ken Sim.

Cyanotype is a photographic printing process that creates unique monochrome blue tones through the hand application of a mild photosensitive solution of ferric ammonium citrate and potassium ferricyanide. Through water bath development and fixing and the addition of simple modifiers like tannic acid, vinegar, and hydrogen peroxide we can pull deep blues and get lovely tonal variation from our prints.
Over three weeks we’ll apply contemporary practices through a systematic testing process made possible with a UV exposure unit. We’ll use a classic cyanotype recipe to create imagery with physical resists and digital negatives and you’ll get to try out some different modifiers. You’ll leave with an understanding of this fascinating alternative photography process, a handful of studies, one larger piece and the ability to develop your own cyanotype practice at home.
About Amanda:
Spoken Languages: English
Amanda Wood (she/her) is a Canadian interdisciplinary artist working among and in between materials and processes to build a visual language that gives shape and voice to the complex realities of divergent minds and bodies. She uses her ever expanding ephemeral and tactile practice to invite dialogue between traditional techniques and the everyday.
Perfect things, and mastery, are less interesting to Amanda than the artefacts of learning. By combining easily sourced and abundant materials, with processes that are deep and unmasterable she is prolific in her unlearning, and research practices. Grounded in craft traditions, scientific methods, and archival practices she focuses on the outcasts and artefacts created by learning and unlearning. The plurality and possibility found in merging the everyday, the unknowable and the temporal bridges the divergent and the typical. These layers of complexity create space to reclaim identity.

The eye health of young people is a crucial priority to ensure their optimal development, both academically and personally. In Canada, several programs and initiatives are in place to ensure that children and adolescents receive the eye care they need. This article explores Canada's main vision care programs for young people aged 18 and under.
The importance of vision care: Early detection of vision problems is essential to avoid long-term complications. Uncorrected vision problems can affect a child's ability to learn and interact with their environment. Regular eye examinations can detect myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and amblyopia (lazy eye) at an early stage.
Vision care programs by province:
Ontario - In Ontario, the "Eye See...Eye Learn®" program offers free eye exams to kindergarteners. This program is essential for identifying vision problems early on in school. If a correction is needed, children receive a free pair of glasses. Eye exams are also covered for young people aged 19 and under.
Quebec - In Quebec, the Régie de l'assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ) program covers eye examinations for children under 18 once every 12 months. This program gives families easy access to optometric care at no additional cost.
In addition, the See Better to Succeed financial assistance program offers a fixed amount of $300 to reimburse the purchase of glasses or contact lenses prescribed by a professional to correct vision for any child under 18. This initiative aims to reduce the financial barriers to access to corrected vision, enabling more children to succeed at school and in their daily lives.
British Columbia - In British Columbia, the Medical Services Plan (MSP) covers annual eye exams for children up to age 18. Parents can ensure their children receive the necessary care to maintain good visual health.
Alberta - In Alberta, the "Eye See...Eye Learn®" program is also in place for kindergarten children. In addition, eye examinations are covered by the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) for young people under 19.
National initiatives:
In addition to provincial programs, several national initiatives aim to improve the eye health of young Canadians. The Canadian Foundation for Eye Disease (CFOD) and the Canadian Association of Optometrists (CAO) are working together to educate parents and teachers about the importance of regular eye exams and to provide resources for access to vision care.
Vision care programs for young people 18 and under in Canada are essential to ensure that all children can develop to their full potential without being hindered by uncorrected vision problems. By taking advantage of the free or subsidized eye exams available in their province, parents can ensure that their children's vision health is well cared for. For more information, consult local resources or talk to a vision care professional.

The event historically brings competition from around the world – this year, the event celebrates local, home-grown talent from across Canada. The dates and competitors are:
Saturday, July 19 – Yukon
Wednesday, July 23 – Quebec
Saturday, July 26 – Nova Scotia
Public safety continues to be our top priority. To ensure this event remains an enjoyable and safe experience for everyone, the City is working closely with partners at the Park Board, Vancouver Police Department, Vancouver Fire Rescue Services and Vancouver Emergency Management Agency.

Vancouver Expands Metro West Inter-Municipal Business Licence to Include Health Care Workers
Mayor's Office Announces Reopening of Kits Pool for Summer 2024
July 5, 2024
